Nobel laureates support Iranian uprising in joint letter
In a joint letter addressed to the President of the European Council, 34 Nobel laureates expressed their support for the ongoing national uprising in Iran, which began six months ago and aims to establish a democratic and free republic. The Iranian people have remained faithful to their quest for freedom and democracy despite the brutal crackdown by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which has left at least 750 dead, including 70 children, and more than 30,000 arrests .
The laureates called on human rights defenders to take concrete steps to support the Just Resistance of the Iranian people, including blacklisting the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps by the European Union and supporting the United Nations fact-finding mission to Iran.
The statement also underlines that representatives of the House of Commons and the House of Lords of the United Kingdom have endorsed the ten-point program of the President-elect of the Iranian opposition, Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, for a democratic republic. secular and non-nuclear, and that the United States House of Representatives passed a resolution recognizing the right of the Iranian people to establish such a republic.
Mister President,
For six months now, the Iranian people have been leading a national uprising in favor of a democratically elected republic. Despite the violent repression by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and the heavy loss of life (750 dead, including at least 70 children, and more than 30,000 arrests), Iran’s brave young men and women have persevered in their quest for democracy, arousing the fear and admiration of people around the world.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) is the main tool of war, repression, terrorism and warmongering. This is why the Iranian people want it to be blacklisted by the civilized world, especially by the European Union. On January 19, 2023, the European Parliament adopted a resolution calling for the designation of the IRGC as a terrorist organization.
The Iranian people’s unwavering determination to achieve the freedoms they have long been denied, despite the high costs, makes it imperative that human rights defenders take concrete action to support the Iranian people and their righteous resistance. .
44 years ago, millions of Iranians rejected the despotic regime of the Shah and his violent secret police (SAVAK) because of the crimes they committed and the torture they inflicted on the people, by participating in mass demonstrations. Today, during the ongoing national demonstrations, they chant: “No to monarchy, no to theocracy!” Yes to democracy, to equality. »
Maryam Rajavi’s 10-point platform for a secular, non-nuclear democratic republic, already supported by the signatories of this declaration, was endorsed by 250 representatives of the UK House of Commons and House of Lords in February 2023 .
The absolute majority of the members of the United States House of Representatives (225 members) also sponsored a resolution (H.Res. 100) in March 2023, which recognizes the right of the Iranian people to establish a secular, non-nuclear democratic republic. and the 10-point platform, which calls for universal suffrage, free elections, a market economy, an independent judiciary, equality of gender, religions and ethnicities, a foreign policy based on peaceful coexistence and a non-nuclear Iran.
The blacklisting of the IRGC by the European Union and the support of the United Nations fact-finding mission in Iran are essential. Let us support the courageous people of Iran in their quest for freedom and democracy and real change in their lives.
Please accept, Mr President, the expression of my best regards,
